Steel and fiberglass doors are very popular due to their strength and durability. Both steel and fiberglass doors can be found at various price points, but steel is often a lower cost option than fiberglass. Steel doors often provide better insulation, but require a bit more maintenance over their lifetime because they are prone to scratching, paint peeling and rust. Fiberglass is virtually maintenance-free and resists denting and scratching better than steel. Modern technology also allows fiberglass doors to be made with wood grain textures and finishes that are not possible with steel doors.

There are a number of popular doorframe material options including natural wood, vinyl clad and cellular PVC. Wood is strong, beautiful and a natural insulator, but it requires more frequent maintenance and touch-ups. It is also prone to rot and other weather damage. Vinyl clad frames offer the strength and insulation of wood covered by more durable vinyl, which significantly cuts down the maintenance, but its wooden interior can still rot or warp. Cellular PVC is virtually maintenance-free, offers excellent durability and insulation value. It can't be painted like wood, but is often available in custom colours to match any home's exterior.
